The BGSB offers students of the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and associated programs an opportunity to gain practical skills and experience while establishing solid industry connections. Launched in 2002, the BGSB Internship Program aims to increase the marketability of BGSB students and graduates.

The program is designed to complement the academic components of the MBA and associated programs with an integrated approach to career development. Registered students are matched with suitable employer organisations based upon the students’ defined career goals, and areas of interest and expertise.

Though the program has been tailored to students, employer organisations enjoy the benefits of working alongside postgraduate business students with practical experience and industry expertise. BGSB interns offer employer organisations cutting-edge academic theory, fresh ideas and enthusiasm.

Students have been involved in projects ranging from internet-based market research, the development of business plans, data analysis and market projection, and product development.

Industry-based Project Opportunities

Through CEED, BGSB offers current students, both domestic and international, the opportunity to undertake an industry-based project - you can earn a scholarship and credit points towards your degree.

CEED Program Qld has been linking students with industry-based projects since 1992.  Over 650 CEED projects have been completed by students, as part of their Uni studies.  Over 80% of CEED students have been awarded a Grade 6 or 7 for their project (assessed by their University) – irrespective of their course GPA.

CEED sources (industry-based) final year thesis, Honours and coursework Masters projects for students in these areas:  Business (MBA, Human Resources, Marketing/Public Relations/Advertising/Events, Finance/Accounting – Masters level only), Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Environmental, Aerospace Avionics, Infomechatronics/Mechatronics, Electrical, Medical, Software/Computer Systems/Telecommunications), Information Technology, and Science (Biology, Biotechnology, Maths, Statistics, Computing Science – Honours and Masters).

MBA students can now enrol in/receive 12cps (2 x 6cps over two consecutive Teaching Periods) for a CEED industry-based project.

All CEED students receive a (tax-free) scholarship and credit points towards their degree.  Projects are usually completed over 2 x Teaching Periods for MBA students.  Each project is completed by an individual student, unless otherwise advertised. 

MBA students work on their project (on-site with the host company) for 2-3 days/week throughout a semester (or Teaching Period).  This amount of time provides students with an opportunity to gain good momentum on their project, valuable industry experience, mentoring and working as part of a ‘real world’ professional team.

Students are co-supervised by the host company and University, and also monitored closely by CEED – to assist students & companies gain the best project result.  Projects are assessed by QUT, as part of the student’s degree.

Project timing/availability:   Summer semester, 1st semester, 2nd semester (or 2 x consecutive Teaching Periods, in accordance with the MBA timetable).

BGSB Internship Program FAQ

Q. What is an internship?

A work-based project designed for students of the BGSB Master of Business Administration (MBA) course, and associated BGSB programs.

An internship affords students practical experience and the opportunity to make valuable industry connections.

An internship is ...

  • optional and will not attract credit points.
  • usually undertaken on a part-time basis, over six to eight consecutive weeks.

Q. Is the program open to all BGSB students?

Students are eligible to register with the program after they have completed 48 credit points of the MBA or an associated program.

Students wishing to participate in the program must satisfy at least one of the following requirements:

  • have successfully completed a minimum of 48 credit points;
  • be on exchange from a partner institution; or
  • have approval from the Program Coordinator

Q. How do interested BGSB students register in the program?

To register with the program, BGSB students forward a comprehensive CV, and completed registration form to the Executive Development Assistant.

Students then meet with the Program Coordinator for a brief discussion to define areas of concentration, interest and expertise.

With this information, suitable employer organisations are identified by the Program Coordinators.

Q. How are terms and conditions of the internship negotiated?

Before the internship commences, terms and conditions are negotiated by the student and employer organisation. The arrangement must be agreeable and beneficial to both parties.

Q. What are my responsibilities as a student involved in the program?

BGSB students engaged in internships will negotiate the terms and conditions of the internship with the employer organisation, and will advise the Program Coordinator of outcomes via email within a reasonable time period.

Students will adhere to agreed tasks and attendance patterns (an informal agreement should be composed and signed by involved parties), and will provide a brief written report to the Program Coordinator once the internship has been completed.

Should a situation arise where the student would like to modify the terms and conditions of the internship, the student will address the matter with the Program Coordinator where possible to do so.

Q. What are the responsibilities of the employer?

Before accepting an intern, the employer organisation must ensure the availability of suitable projects and tasks. During the internship, the employer organisation will monitor the progress of the intern and encourage communication and feedback with the intern.

The employer organisation will provide facilities for the intern, and will be responsible for work-related expenses incurred by the intern.

The employer is also expected to provide feedback to the Program Coordinator.

Q. What support will the BGSB provide to students engaged in internships?

The role of the Program Coordinator is one of facilitation.

The coordinator will:

  • offer assistance to students on internship-related matters;
  • liaise with the employer organisation and endeavour to ensure suitability of projects;
  • provide information regarding insurance coverage
  • provide guidelines to the students and employer; and
  • coordinate academic supervision where necessary.
