Plagiarism and Cheating
The BGSB position on Plagiarism & Cheating:
In 2001, the BGSB Teaching and Learning Committee determined that all written assessment items for MBA units must be submitted in electronic form. Instructors may also request hard copy, but it is a requirement that, in addition, the BGSB receives a electronic copy via the relevant unit Blackboard site.
This policy is primarily designed to help the BGSB combat plagiarism. Plagiarism is not a new phenomenon, of course, but given the proliferation of easily accessible electronic resources in recent times, it has become so much easier for students to 'cut and paste', and this can sometimes lead to assignments being submitted that are not adequately referenced. This is not a problem specific to the BGSB, but in the interest of quality and our reputation as a leading business school, we have determined that we will take steps to eliminate all forms of plagiarism.
The Rules on Assessment
If you are unsure about what constitutes plagiarism, and the penalties for breaching the rules, refer to the QUT Student Rules.
Penalty for Late Submission of Assignments
While the granting of extensions for assignments is dependent upon the particular circumstances of both the lecturer and student, the following principles will be applied:
- Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the lecturer;
- Students must submit a written request to the lecturer, prior to the due date, and include supporting documentation that demonstrates the significance of their situation (eg. medical certificate, letter from employer);
- If no request is received, a late submission penalty of 10% per day may be applied at the discretion of the lecturer.
Penalty for Exceeding Word Limits
The BGSB will endeavour to ensure the consistent application of assignment word limits. Academic staff will follow the procedure outlined below for all assignments that exceed the specified word limit.
While a word count of up to 10% over the word limit would be accepted, for those assignments that fall outside of the acceptable range, the lecturer may choose to either:
1. Reduce the mark of that particular assessment item by 10% of the total mark available for that item (eg. for an assignment that receives 17 out of a possible total of 20 marks but exceeds the word limit by over 10%, the mark would be reduced by two to a total of 15 out of 20);
OR
2. Draw a line at the point where the assessment item exceeds 10% above the word limit and not read past that point.
