Image of Martin Conneely, QUT Graduate"I completed my undergraduate degree at QUT in 2002 and immediately jumped on a plane for London to spend a year traveling around Europe. When I returned, I was unsure of a career path but liked the thought of specialising through a postgraduate degree. I chose QUT because I had studied there previously and really liked their approach to learning. I enrolled in the Masters program and because of my interest in information systems and enterprise-wide resource planning, I tailored my degree in this direction."

QUT's Master of Business provided Martin Conneely with hands-on experience, which now helps him to succeed as a consultant with Ernst and Young.

BGSB offers Master of Business programs in 10 different disciplinary fields. In all cases, the Master of Business consists of two components, the Foundation Studies component (Part A) and the Discipline component (Part B). The foundation studies component provides you with an introduction to your chosen discipline, along with other introductory business studies. For some majors, Foundation Studies units may be fixed in order to satisfy either prerequisite or professional accreditation requirements. In others, you'll be given a choice from the Foundation Studies List.

The Discipline component (Part B) provides discipline-based knowledge in the major you've chosen. You will be required to complete eight units (96 credit points) to satisfy Part B.

The Master of Business - Advanced consists of Part A and Part B of the Master of Business, plus an additional Part C. Part C consists of 48 credit points, and provides the opportunity for you to gain additional depth in your chosen study area and to tailor your studies to suit your interests and professional requirements. In most cases, your options include a choice between a research dissertation, or further coursework studies in your chosen major, or the choice of a minor in another business discipline.

Dissertation option

A dissertation will allow you to apply your knowledge to a real-world problem or area of interest through independent research. The completion of such a research project will not only give you expert knowledge in a specific area of your business major, but also provide you with skills in research techniques to apply in the workplace, or expand your academic opportunities to include PhD level study.

Complementary business minor

Further coursework studies are available in majors where professional recognition requirements dictate the content of the Masters program - so this option gives you more flexibility to choose units of most interest to you. The choice of a minor in another business discipline allows you to diversify your knowledge through a complementary or alternative business area.
